To help customers decarbonize their heating systems, Eversource is committed to exploring and developing innovative technologies, primarily geothermal generation. Geothermal systems use water, wells, piping, and pumps to pull heat from the ground to warm buildings in winter, and pump heat from those buildings back into the ground in summer. In 2024, Eversource turned on a first-of-its-kind geothermal system in Framingham, Massachusetts, as part of a pilot project to understand the potential of offering larger geothermal programs as an alternative energy source.
Offshore wind is also a significant force in decarbonizing New England’ s energy generation footprint. Although Eversource has divested its offshore wind developments, it remains a leading player in the historic shift to clean energy and will continue to build the onshore infrastructure for both Revolution Wind in Rhode Island and Connecticut, and Sunrise Wind in New York.
In 2024, together with partner Ørsted, Eversource completed South Fork Wind, a 12-turbine, 132-megawatt, offshore wind farm off the coast of Long Island. South Fork Wind is the first operational commercialscale offshore wind farm in the US, providing enough energy to power around 70,000 homes.
